Set in an imposing, majestic neoclassical palatial building constructed in the early 20th century by the architect José María Mendoza Ussía to house the former Vizcaya timber company, this five-star boutique hotel perfectly embodies Madrid’s stately, bright, discreet and residential bourgeois luxury. Strategically located between the elegant Chamberí district and the avant-garde Justicia and Chueca area, the hotel is the perfect bridge between classic elegance and the city’s contemporary design trends. The architectural restoration rigorously preserved the most important defining features of the original property, such as its neoclassical façade with stone reliefs and Talavera de la Reina tiles, the artistic stained glass of the main staircase and the legendary original hardwood lift, which is still fully working. The interiors, designed by the renowned interior architect Antonio Obrador, opt for a sophistication based on natural light, a palette of soft, relaxing colours (creams, ochres and pale greens), polished oak floors, walls lined with oriental-design wallpapers and clean-lined, mid-century-inspired furniture that brings a unique residential warmth.

The hotel has 78 stately rooms and suites laid out to emulate the floor plan of an upper-class Madrid apartment. The rooms have high ceilings, large balconied windows that flood the spaces with natural light, separate dressing rooms and sophisticated marble bathrooms with hydromassage bathtubs and separate rain showers. The superior suites add large living rooms, private dining areas and spectacular furnished outdoor terraces facing the neoclassical buildings of Calle de Mejía Lequerica. The cornerstone of the Urso’s exclusivity is its Spa, widely considered one of Madrid’s most prestigious boutique wellness centres as the capital’s first urban spa to operate under the Spanish luxury cosmetics brand Natura Bissé; this underground sanctuary has a hydrotherapy pool with therapeutic jets dug out between the old stone walls of the building’s basement, an oriental steam bath (“hammam”), high-tech facial and body treatment rooms and a full gym with advanced cardio equipment. The food highlight is the Media Ración restaurant, a culinary concept led by chef Fernando Cuenllas that reinterprets the traditional recipes and classic tapas of Madrid’s taverns with gourmet execution and exceptional market produce, accompanied by one of the city’s most complete cellars of wines and sherries. The hotel also offers its iconic central Greenhouse, a glass-walled space surrounded by plants where top-notch breakfasts are served with local artisan pastries and the traditional chocolate con churros with a gourmet twist.
