About Mandarin Oriental Ritz
The Mandarin Oriental Ritz is a five-star grand luxury hotel on Plaza de la Lealtad, opposite the Prado and the Thyssen museums, with three Michelin Keys. It reopened on 15 April 2021 after a complete refurbishment and has 153 rooms and suites, from 29 to 188 m².
Its dining includes Deessa, by Quique Dacosta, with two Michelin stars, the Palm Court, the Pictura bar, the Champagne Bar and El Jardín del Ritz, its terrace. For events it has the Salón Real, for 350 people at a cocktail reception, the Felipe IV room, for 160, and the terrace, for 120, which host private parties, presentations and VIP events. Reception is open 24 hours; check-in is from 15:00 and check-out until 12:00.
-Origins: it opened in 1910 at the initiative of Alfonso XIII, who wanted a Ritz like those in Paris and London.
-Architecture: Belle Époque style, by Charles Mewès (the architect of the Paris Ritz) and Luis de Landecho. It was one of the first buildings in Madrid made with reinforced concrete.
-History: in 1916 Mata Hari stayed here under the alias “Countess Maslov”. During the Civil War it was a military hospital, and Durruti died there.
-Famous guests: Hemingway, Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner and Madonna. Sinatra sang to Ava Gardner at the bar’s piano.
-Ownership: the Marquet family owned it from 1926 to 1978. It then passed through Forte and Belmond. In 2015 Mandarin Oriental and the Olayan group bought it for US$148 million.
Refurbishment (2015-2021): carried out by Rafael de La-Hoz and the Gilles & Boissier studio, at a cost of about US$103-121 million. They uncovered the Palm Court’s glass dome, which had been covered up for 80 years.
-Details: the private dining room “Condesa Maslov” seats 10. The Pictura bar displays portraits by the photographer Paula Anta. In the basement there’s a marble spa with a pool.
