About Horcher

Horcher is a Madrid institution opposite the gardens of the Retiro, next to the Puerta de Alcalá, where it has served classic Central European cooking and the finest game since 1943. Its story begins in 1904, when Gustav Horcher opened the first Horcher restaurant in Berlin; his son Otto took it to other capitals, such as Vienna, London, Oslo, Riga, Tallinn, Lisbon and Madrid, and today his great-granddaughter Elisabeth Horcher leads the fourth generation of one of fine dining’s most emblematic family dynasties, with Blas Benito, Raúl Rodríguez, Miguel Hermann and Javier Mora heading the dining room and kitchen. In its rooms of patterned wallpaper, candles and paintings, part of Spain’s contemporary history has been cooked, and Sophia Loren, John Wayne and Salvador Dalí have dined. Its classics live on: pressed partridge, loin of roe deer, stroganoff, goulash, oxtail and dishes with beluga caviar, with soufflé potatoes, and for dessert Baumkuchen, the German “tree cake” made in-house. It holds two Repsol Suns and a first-rate wine cellar.
