Call to bookAbout Lhardy
Lhardy is Madrid’s most historic restaurant, opened in 1839 in the same building on the Carrera de San Jerónimo, next to the Puerta del Sol, where it continues today in its third century. It was founded by Emilio Huguenin, born in Montbéliard to Swiss parents, who had been a cook in Paris and a restaurateur in Bordeaux, and brought the best of European cooking to Madrid; behind its Second Empire façade the fall of kings, republics and restorations have been decided, and its regulars have ranged from Azorín and Galdós to Gómez de la Serna and Azaña. It keeps the courtly atmosphere of 19th-century Madrid in its rooms: the Isabelino, the main dining room, the Japanese, the White, the Sarasate, the Gayarre and the Tamberlick, and the famous mirror in which, Azorín said, “we fade into eternity”. Its menu joins classics of Madrid gastronomy, such as the legendary Lhardy cocido, tripe, croquettes, beef Wellington, duck and soufflé, with new creations. On the ground floor is its shop, with the celebrated consommé served standing up, pastries and orders to take away.
